CCS (Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage) and CCU (Carbon Dioxide Utilization) technology capturing and pressing carbon dioxide in the ground
2 Februar 2024 in “Welt”, by Philipp Woldin, at about 15th of January 2024, https://www.msn.com/de-de/finanzen/top-stories/jetzt-kommt-die-gro%C3%9Fe-kehrtwende-der-umweltverb%C3%A4nde-bei-der-co-speicherung/ar-AA1mLjTb?ocid=msedgdhp&pc=LCTS&cvid=2c468f959e2d4e1c8255b5adda8401a5&ei=49 “The majority of protectors of environment and nature until now have rejected the procedure of pressing CO2 into the ground because they feared incalculable damage from escaping gas. And they speculated that CCS could be used as an excuse to postpone measures to reduce CO₂ emissions.” … “ CCS: The carbon dioxide is captured during industrial processes and pressed into the ground at high pressure, be it on land or under the sea, for example in the North Sea. The theory goes that it is bound and can no longer cause any damage to the climate.”… CCU “stands for “Carbon Dioxide Utilization”. The captured carbon dioxide is further used, for example as a raw material for the chemical industry.
According to the law, CCS in Germany is currently only possible for research purposes and on a very small scale. But the federal government has been working on a carbon management strategy (CMS) since last year”. German newspaper SZ (Süddeutsche Zeitung) said “Norway has been using the technology for years and has offered countries like Germany to store their CO₂ under the North Sea. Since 1996, carbon dioxide has been injected into the Sleipner natural gas field around 260 kilometers off the west coast of Norway…. A comparable large-scale project is underway in Denmark, and Great Britain and the Netherlands are planning something similar. All have their CCS repositories in the North Sea in now exhausted gas and oil reserves.” …”The Federation of German Industries (BDI), the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB) and the environmental protection organizations Nabu and WWF have published a theses paper on the transformation of the industry that is quite impressive.. It quotes: ”It is right to now give priority to using CCS and CCU where CO₂ emissions cannot be avoided based on current technical standards.” Please see also https://www.nabu.de/umwelt-und-ressourcen/forschungspolitik/32419.html#Wie%20l%C3%A4sst%20sich%20CO%E2%82%82%20Wieder%20Einfangen? The NABU (environmental protection organization) describes the technology of CCS and CCU.
