The Netherlands intends to shut down Europe's largest gas field near Groningen in October 2024. The underground gas fields are the largest in Europe and the eleven wells have been producing around 22 billion cubic meters of gas per year since the 1960s. The NAM group is probably half owned by Shell Netherlands and half by ExxonMobil. There is probably a functioning network of pipelines where non-European nations could feed in their gas.

But for more than 20 years, residents have complained about earthquakes caused by gas extraction, which have severely damaged homes. Therefore, gas production should be stopped completely as early as 2022, but due to the uncertain international situation and in the event of a gas shortage, gas should still be able to be withdrawn until October 2024.
