The data are converted into light signals, transported through the glass fibre and than converted into legible data at the terminal. In a normal current cable you can do that too: then the data is transported as an electron in the current. Fibre optic cables are much more popular because they can carry a lot more data than a power line. And data transmission from smart phones has increased: As I was informed only smart phones worldwide now need 4,200 MW, i.e. 3 nuclear power plants as German Brockdorf. Better to produce this energy need by solar energy!
